Presentation of the Degree

  • Do you want to train as a professional in the leading field of renewable energy, energy efficiency and sustainability?
  • Would you like to help create a more sustainable and efficient world?
  • Would you like to develop the energy systems of the future?
  • Do you want to train in a sector with excellent job prospects?
  • Do you like nature and want to help preserve it?

The training of the Degree in Energy Engineering and Sustainability in energy and emerging technologies is a strategic commitment of the highest priority, both at a European and global level.

According to the forecasts of the International Energy Agency, the use of energy in the world will increase by one third until 2040 (World Energy Outlook 2015), mainly due to economic and demographic growth in developing countries. On the other hand, the current energy system based on fossil resources is unsustainable due to the limited availability of these resources, as well as their environmental impact. Therefore, the transition to a new energy model that guarantees universal access to affordable, safe, sustainable and modern energy is one of the great challenges that society will have to face in the coming years. In Catalonia, the National Pact for the Energy Transition aims to achieve an energy model based 100% on renewable energies by the 2050 horizon and meet the objectives of the new Clean Energy for Garlic Europeans package of the European Union.

On the other hand, it will be necessary to train the general population in the new energy scenario. This training will not only be at a technical level but it will have to involve important mentality changes to understand and accept the new situation. In this sense, it will be necessary to integrate the concepts of energy efficiency and renewable energies at all educational levels. Thus, the need for adequately prepared professionals who lead the transition of the energy model and are also able to communicate to society the ideas of sustainability and rational use of resources is evident.

In addition, if you are also interested in mechanical engineering and you are a good student, at the  Polytechnic School you can also take the Double Degree in Mechanical Engineering and Energy and Sustainability Engineering that begins the 2020-21 academic year.

Why do you have to study this degree at EPS?

The Graduate in Energy Engineering and Sustainability proposed by the EPS of the UdL corresponds to the profile of a professional with an integrated vision of energy systems, with the ability to design, optimize and manage generation, transmission, distribution, storage systems and energy production. These graduates will have to be able to design and advise administrations and private entities on the energy policies to be implemented, applying criteria of sustainability and global efficiency. Likewise, it will be about people capable of leading R + D + Y in the energy sector. In sum, the profile of the Graduate in Energy Engineering and Sustainability is that of a professional with a strong scientific base and who is capable of making decisions based on technical and sustainability criteria.

It should be noted that graduates in Energy and Sustainability Engineering will be able to access the Master in Industrial Engineering, taught at the EPS, which enables the profession of industrial engineer.

Lleida is strategically located with respect to the main energy production centers in Catalonia. On the one hand, it should be noted that the large hydroelectric power plants of the Pyrenees are located in the province of Lleida, which generate 70% of the electricity of hydraulic origin in Catalonia. In the surrounding regions in the city of Lleida (Garrigues, Pla d'Urgell, Segrià) the main photovoltaic area of Catalonia is concentrated, due to its favorable weather conditions, with 44% of Catalan production and with excellent prospects for growth . The production of energy from agricultural forest residues and slurry is also important (66% of the Catalan total). Likewise, it is necessary to highlight the proximity in the town of Ascó (in the province of Tarragona, but located 60 km from Lleida), where two nuclear power plants are located and that, with an installed power greater than 2000 MW, is the first electric power producing center of Catalonia.

At the level of the Higher Polytechnic School, the fact that it houses the INSPIRES research center (Polytechnic Institute of Research and Innovation in Sustainability, www.inspires.udl.cat) stands out. INSPIRES is a multidisciplinary group that has special attention in research around the best energy management, efficiency, usability, security, high-performance computing and problem solving and optimization, among other topics. All with common links, revolving around the field of sustainability and technology. INSPIRES includes several world-leading research groups in the energy field.

To implement the Degree in Energy Engineering and Sustainability, which is organized in person, the Higher Polytechnic School offers:

  • Validation of Higher Degree Training Cycles (CFGS) to the Degree in Energy Engineering and Sustainability.

  • Small groups that facilitate exchange with the teaching staff and a more careful monitoring of the work carried out by the student.

  • Continuous evaluation.

  • Block curricular qualification of the subjects corresponding to the same academic year Individualized tutorials. At EPS, each student has a tutor assigned to whom they can address any question related to their studies.

  • Within the Néstor tutoring program, attention mechanisms are established for the student.

  • Incorporation of active methodologies Compulsory supervised internships in companies that allow to favor the labor insertion of graduates (75 annual offers of internships).

  • The possibility of carrying out these practices in the international arena. Final Degree Project with tutoring and continuous evaluation.

  • The possibility of carrying out the TFG within the framework of the company.

Which Industrial Engineering degree can I choose?

The industrial engineering programmes at the Polytechnic School are designed in order to offer flexibility to students to decide which of the 5 degrees in the industial field they want to enrole:

  • Mechanical Engineering (Campus Lleida)
  • Industrial and Automatic Electronic Engineering
  • Energy Engineering and Sustainability
  • Chemical engineering
  • Engineering in Industrial Organization and Logistics.

Students willing to enroll in any of these programmes, need to pre-register for a single common entrance for each of the campuses. Thus, the student can choose which of the two campuses he will attend  during the first two years, and can change his campus during the 3rd and 4th year, if he wishes (depending on the degree he wants to study). University pre-registration tickets are:

  • On the Lleida campus: "Energy and Sustainability Engineering / Engineering in Industrial and Automatic Electronics / Mechanical Engineering (Agrupación) (Lleida)"
  • On the Igualada campus: "Chemical Engineering / Engineering in Industrial Organization and Logistics (Grouping) (Igualada)"

Hence, the common core of industrial engineering gives students more time to decide which degree they want to pursue. This decision is postponed until the 3rd year, when the student is well acquainted with the different branches of the industrial field.

Professional attributions

Order CIN/351/2009 establishes which bachelor degrees  qualify for the profession of Industrial Technical Engineer. At the Polytechnic School, the degrees offered with these professional attributions are:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Degree in Automation and Industrial Electronic Engineering.
  • Degree in Chemical Engineering.

Furthermore, the Polytechnic School also offers two other degrees in the field of industrial engineering:

  • Degree in Industrial Organization and Logistics Engineering.
  • Degree in Energy and Sustainability Engineering.

These degrees offer specialized training in two branches of industrial engineering, and also give direct access to the Master in Industrial Engineering, which allows you to achieve the professional qualifications of Industrial Engineer.

Job opportunities

Graduates in Energy and Sustainability Engineering from the Higher Polytechnic School enjoy a similar job placement as for other degrees in the industrial field. In this sense, it should be noted that the occupation values, provided by the AQU, registered by the profession of industrial technical engineer, mechanical specialty, denote that almost one full occupation (100%) of the graduates are working, having finished the career in 2010. In short, taking into account the insertion data of the sector, we can assure that they will enjoy a high percentage of LABOR INSERTION.

Some professional opportunities will be:

  • Energy production, transport and marketing companies (electricity, water, gas).
  • Technical management in companies with intensive energy consumption.
  • Engineering, consulting, certification companies.
  • Carrying out environmental impact assessments, energy efficiency studies, etc.
  • Renewable energy sector.
  • Public administration.
  • Teaching and research.
